Does Bipolar Diagnosis Qualify for VA or SSI/SSDI Benefits?

  • January 31st, 2024
Q
I was diagnosed as passive/aggressive in the Navy (1971), and a psychiatrist recently confirmed my condition as Bipolar. With medication, I still have suicidal ideation. Do I qualify for VA or SSI/SSDI benefits?
A

Various agencies and organizations address the benefits that veterans receive. It can be confusing to determine whether you qualify and overwhelming to fill out the applications. This is why many Veterans don’t pursue the benefits available to them.

Mental Health Conditions

One of the biggest challenges veterans face is poor mental health which can affect family relationships, and employment, often leading to homelessness.

A bipolar diagnosis is included on the list of qualifying mental health issues for VA benefits as well as Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI).
