Daniel M. Surprenant, Esq. is a partner in the firm, focusing his practice in the areas of estate planning, elder law and special needs planning. He received his law degree from Suffolk University Law School in 1996 and his undergraduate degree in Economics from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1991.
Attorney Surprenant is a Certified Elder Law Attorney (CELA), certified by the National Elder Law Foundation. He currently serves as Vice President of the Massachusetts Chapter of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (MassNAELA). His is Vice Chair of the Southcoast Senior Resource Association. Attorney Surprenant is a past Director and Treasurer of the Massachusetts Forum of Estate Planning Attorneys. He is a member of WealthCounsel, a national organization of estate planning attorneys, as well as the Academy of Special Needs Planners. He is also a member of the Alzheimer’s Association and a frequent speaker on Medicaid, Estate Planning and Special Needs issues.
Attorney Surprenant is a Past President of the Bristol County Bar Association. He is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, the Bristol County Bar Association and the New Bedford Bar Association. He also serves on the President’s Advisory Board for Bishop Stang High School where he attended in the eighties. Attorney Surprenant is licensed to practice in Massachusetts as well as before the United States District Court.
Prior to joining Surprenant and Beneski, P.C., Attorney Surprenant worked as a civil litigator, focusing in complex medical malpractice actions and construction site accidents. Before that, Attorney Surprenant prosecuted criminals as an Assistant District Attorney in Bristol County, where he was assigned to the Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Unit as well as to the Homicide Response Team. Prior to law school, Mr. Surprenant served for one year as a live-in co-director of Andre House of California, a small homeless shelter in Oakland, CA. He also served for one year as a counselor-technician on a locked psychiatric facility for adolescents in Colorado Springs, CO. Mr. Surprenant and his wife, Dr. Katherine Lacoste Surprenant, have three beautiful children.
