Can I Give My Sister POA Over My Bank Account? She's on SSI.

  • March 26th, 2024
Q
I would like to give my sister power of attorney over my personal bank account. My sister is on SSI. I am the trustee of her Special Needs Trust. She would not have POA or access to the trust account. Would making her POA over my personal bank account affect her SSI status and benefits?
A

No, that would be fine. The money would remain yours and your sister would be acting as a fiduciary on your behalf. This should not affect her eligibility for SSI or any other public benefit program.
