Free At-Home COVID-19 Test Kit Shipment Program Ends; Blind, Low-Vision Users Can Continue to Request Accessible Kits
- August 30th, 2022
Beginning Friday, September 2, 2022, free at-home COVID-19 tests will no longer be supplied to citizens by the federal government. Note, however, that the suspension of this program does not apply to the more accessible version of the COVID-19 tests developed for users who are blind or have low vision.
The COVID-19 rapid test kits had previously been sent at no cost to households, upon request, using the U.S. Postal Service. Lack of dedicated funding has been cited as the cause for the program’s suspension. More than 600 million free tests have been distributed to the public since this past January.
Users who are blind or have low vision can continue to request the more accessible at-home tests via the U.S. Postal Service’s website while supplies last.
