TakeawaysThe Social Security Administration (SSA) has added 14 diseases and medical conditions to its Compassionate Allowances List (CAL). The CAL initiative helps the agency more quickly identify and expedite disability claims involving severe medical conditions.
Applicants for Supplemental Security Income (SSI) or Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) must meet the SSA’s strict definition of disability, along with the program’s other eligibility requirements. The approval process can sometimes take months. The CAL initiative can speed up claim processing, but inclusion on the lit does not automatically guarantee approval.

“The Compassionate Allowances initiative cuts through red tape and allows us to deliver support to individuals who experience life-changing diagnoses and need help fast,” SSA Commissioner Frank J. Bisignano stated in a news release on the SSA website.
