Do My Social Security Benefits Change If I Am Now Injured?

  • February 23rd, 2024
Q
I have been on Social Security for about seven years. Since I started my Social Security benefits, I have had a serious accident and lost the use of the fingers on my right hand. Do my benefits change with this injury?
A

Probably not. The question is whether you began taking reduced Social Security benefits prior to your full retirement age. In that case, your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) may be higher. The problem is applying for SSDI is not a simple process. You would have to prove your disability just as you would if you were applying for SSDI at a younger age.
