Read moreSocial Security disability benefits will rise 3.6 percent in 2027, up from the 2.8 percent increase in 2026.
The maximum monthly federal SSI payment will increase to $1,029 for individuals and $1,544 for couples. SSDI amounts will depend on each individual.
The increase is automatic. SSI recipients will see it on December 31, 2026, and most SSDI recipients in their January 2027 payment.
2027 brings an increase in benefits for Americans who rely on Social Security disability benefits programs. This includes those who qualify for benefits under Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI). Every October, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announces the next year’s cost-of-living adjustment (COLA).
The Social Security COLA is an annual increase in benefit payments that helps recipients keep up with rising prices. The goal is to ensure their monthly checks don’t lose buying power over time. The amount each year is tied to changes in the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). For 2027, the COLA will increase by 3.6 percent, a notable bump up from the COLA increase of 2.8 percent for 2026.

Commissioner of the SSA, Frank J. Bisignano, spoke of the importance of COLA. Highlighting what this adjustment means for beneficiaries, he says: “Social Security will implement this cost-of-living adjustment for 76 million Americans, giving them greater financial stability.”
Individuals receiving SSI benefits will see their maximum monthly benefits payment increase by $35, from $994 to $1,029. For couples, the maximum monthly payment will increase from $1,491 to $1,544, a difference of $53.
SSI benefits recipients should see the increased amount starting with the payments they receive on December 31, 2026. About 7.3 million people currently receive SSI benefits.
Individuals who receive SSDI benefits will also see a 3.6 percent increase in their payments. Every recipient's situation is unique. SSDI calculates benefit amounts based on the recipient's lifetime average earnings before they acquired their disability. As such, it's not possible to state the specific amount each person will receive from the COLA increase.
However, the average monthly SSDI payment for disabled workers was $1,642. Using that number, the average disabled worker can expect $1,701, a $59 increase in 2027.
For many, these benefits are a primary source of income. The 3.6 percent increase will give the roughly 76 million Americans who receive Social Security or SSI benefits more financial stability.
